It is never easy to write about yourself. According to my opinion it is kind of a statement – summary about my current position in life, what I have done or what are my goals. In a way one can look at it as at a mission statement of a business, where typical questions are what is the purpose, what we have done and how we are going to develop ourselves.
Born and raised in Baku – capital of Azerbaijan, part of unexciting today USSR. Since then I have changed several countries and some how until today the place of birth in my passport is stated as USSR. In 1987 I got my first SLR camera and began my photographic career as a family photographer.
My passion for photography survived immigration to Israel and military service. In 1997 I was lucky to be accepted to Hadassah College, photography department. Why lucky? I think because the college was the best photo school in Israel and at that time it was just a beginning of digital era and I was able to learn both from analog and digital photography.
I have an extensive photographic experience, but my truly passion is to be able “catch the moment”. Some call it hunting, but who cares about their opinion when you are really looking for the moment. Unfortunately, after living for some years in Europe I inevitably became more correct European. That makes for me snap shooting from a zero distance more complicated. As a result I tend to photograph more postcard type of pictures. In any case my motto in photography is best represented by Roland Barthes who said “What the photograph reproduces to infinity has occurred only once: the photograph mechanically repeats what could never be repeated existentially”.
It is not a good idea to limit myself to specific themes or subjects. I am always open to try or experience something new. However, most enjoyable for me is photographing people. It is a great challenge to capture in a still frame that one moment which defines one’s personality. For me photography is more than just work or hobby. It gives me a possibility to meet new people and explore new places.
